Safety from a place-oriented public health perspective – XI CJS e-Conference -26 November – 6.30pm (CET)
The CJS (Interdisciplinary Research Centre on Crime, Justice and Security) of the University of Porto is pleased to invite you to attend the XI CJS e-Conference, with Prof. Vania Ceccato on “Safety from a place-oriented public health perspective”.
Vania Ceccato is a Professor at the Department of Urban Planning and Environment, School of Architecture and the Built Environment, KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Stockholm, Sweden). She coordinates the national network Safeplaces, funded by The Swedish National Crime Prevention Council.
Ceccato’s research is on the situational conditions of crime and crime prevention in urban and rural environments. She is interested in the relationship between the built environment and crime and perceived safety, in particular, the space-time dynamics of crime and people’s routine activity. Gendered safety and the intersectionality of victimization are essential components in her research. She is the author of “Rural crime and community safety” (2016) and “Moving Safely, Crime and perceived safety in Stockholm’s subways stations” (2013).

Abstract
In this lecture, I argue in favor of a place-oriented public health perspective on safety in public spaces. I start by discussing how public spaces can affect individuals’ health via their impact on individuals’ behavior, patterns of crime victimization, and fall injuries and then by providing three of the most recent research strands. I close with a discussion of theoretical and practical potentialities as well as future challenges when adopting a place-oriented public health perspective to safety in public spaces.
