Säkraplatsers pris till minne av Ida Johansson
The SafePlaces Prize is presented annually to one or two students at Swedish universities whose bachelor’s or master’s theses make a significant contribution to improving safety and security in public environments.
Award and Eligibility Criteria
The award (SEK 3,000 – 5,000) is presented each year to one or two students at Swedish universities whose thesis contributes to enhancing safety and security in public spaces. The prize amount is determined annually by the SafePlaces Network.
Eligible theses should focus on how public environments can be designed or managed to prevent crime and improve perceived safety through situational crime prevention and other safety-enhancing measures. Relevant topics include, but are not limited to, crime prevention through environmental and urban design (CPTED) and other interventions in residential areas, streets and public squares, shopping centres, parks, public transport systems (including stations and stops), sports arenas, recreational facilities, and similar public settings. Theses employing qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods are all welcome.
Theses adopting a broader public health perspective are also eligible. This includes studies examining the relationship between the quality of the built environment and individuals’ fear of crime, taking into account factors such as gender, age, physical and psychological ability, and socioeconomic background. Particular consideration will be given to studies focusing on the safety and security of women and/or LGBTQI+ communities.
